Grants to Washington, DC nonprofit organizations to support costs associated with arts and humanities field trips for K-12 students in local public schools. Funding is available for field trips related to film, dance, theatre, music, and visual arts. Funding will support the cost of field trip tickets, associated transportation costs, professional development opportunities for classroom educators, and/or pre/post-field trip workshops for students. Attendance at one of three in-person workshops is a requirement for application to the DAHI grant program. Funding may also be allocated to necessary personnel support for the planning and implementation of the program.

CAH seeks grant applications from qualified arts and humanities organizations offering comprehensive field trip experiences for students in the District of Columbia’s public schools. Field trip experiences are defined as those that take place during the traditional school day and require students to be transported to a cultural site to participate in a professional-quality performance, visual arts exhibition or humanities experience. CAH will award select applicants (“grantees”) a grant of funds to support the delivery of their proposed project.

FY 2019 General Operations Support (GOS) grantees may apply to the Field Trip Experiences grant program, but must demonstrate their application increases the number of field trips offered or the total number of students served to those already underwritten in their FY 2019 GOS application. They may also expand their current field trip opportunities to include complementary workshops around field trips to students and teachers.

Organizations may submit one application to the grant program and must target one grade grouping. The following grade groupings are aligned with DCPS’ curricular framework for the arts. Deviations from these guidelines will render applications disqualified and will not be accepted for review:

-9th Grade – 12th Grade: Film or Theatre

*Applicants are encouraged to consider the inclusion of the humanities in their applications and/or to consider partnerships with humanities organizations in the realization of their projects.

By making its DAHI grant awards, CAH endeavors to meet the following goals, and an applicant’s submission should offer consideration to these goals:
-Provide access to comprehensive arts and humanities field trip experiences that work to advance student achievement in the District of Columbia;
-Create a strategic approach to the planning and delivery of field trip experiences and associated programming to students and teachers;
-Make authentic connections to curricular content / themes across targeted grade levels in collaboration with appropriate personnel at DCPS and DCPCS;
-Encourage collaboration between arts and humanities organizations and create the opportunity to build a “community of practice” between organizations within their discipline of specialty;
-Foster new relationships between arts and humanities organizations and public schools across the city; and,
-Demonstrate measurable impact of field trip experiences and associated programming on participating students and teachers.

Successful DAHI applications:
-Include a comprehensive overview of the scope of program delivery to-date, if applicable and a strong programmatic plan for delivery of the proposed project. Programmatic details should include numbers of teachers and students served and their respective grades.
-Provide evidence of authentic connections to curricular themes in both arts or humanities and non-arts or humanities content for targeted grade level(s).
-Include sample syllabi / lesson plans for any professional development or workshops included in the scope of the application. Evidence of useful tools and strategies for classroom teachers to embed in their teaching practice should be included as part of any supporting documents or plans.
-Include testimonies from teachers, principals, parents / caregivers and students to support the success of field trip experiences and associated programs delivered by their organizations.
-Demonstrate evidence of student engagement in the activities offered as part of their program.
-Demonstrate the organizational capacity to manage and deliver the scope of the proposed program.

District Government (through its subordinate agency, CAH) has determined to be valid expenditures.
Examples of “Allowable Costs”
-A per-student ticket cost based on the applicant’s group sales ticket price for a performance / exhibition / experience. The per-student ticket price should include all costs associated with student participation in the field trip experience;
-Salaries for arts and humanities educators for nonprofit organizations directly related to the administration of the field trip experience or the planning of complementary workshops for the same;
-Teaching artists / consultants paid for the implementation of the project, if not included in staff salaries;
-Travel and transportation directly related to project implementation; and,
-Materials, supplies and equipment purchases no more than 25% of the award that are directly related to workshop implementation associated with the field trip experience.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access:

CAH believes that all District residents should be able to access arts and humanities experiences for their benefit. To facilitate this vision, CAH has adopted a cultural equity policy known as I.D.E.A. (inclusion, diversity, equity, access). By incorporating I.D.E.A. across grants programs, CAH seeks to help grantees develop programs that are inclusive of diverse populations and provide equitable accessibility to those populations.

In addition to detailed plans for its compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (42 U.S.C. §§ 12101 et seq.), each applicant must demonstrate how the project will be inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible throughout the District of Columbia, beyond participants with disabilities. Successful applications will consider a broad definition of “accessibility” by addressing financial, geographic, demographic, cultural and developmental access.

Eligibility Requirements of Applicants:

-Be incorporated as a nonprofit with a federally designated tax exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) code, as evidenced by an IRS determination letter that is dated at least one year prior to the application deadline date;
-Demonstrate that one hundred percent (100%) of the project deliverables occur within the District of Columbia;
-Register and comply with the regulatory requirements of the following agencies: 1) District of Columbia Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA)- Corporations Division (indicating an “active” business license status at the time of application, and agreeing to maintain such status throughout the grant period); 2) District of Columbia Office of the Chief Financial Officer, Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR); 3) District of Columbia Department of Employment Services (DOES); and 4) United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS);
-Obtain certification of “Citywide Clean Hands” (CCH) from the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue (see page 11);
-Be in good standing with CAH. (Note that applicants with incomplete or delinquent reports from any prior funding program, as of October 15, 2018, are ineligible to receive additional funds from CAH in FY 2019); and,
-Have a principal business office address that is located in the District of Columbia, subject to on-site visit. (Note: CAH will not allow post office boxes or the addresses of a board member or volunteer as evidence of the principal business address).

Applicant Restrictions (non-eligibility):
-Organizations that require “fiscal agents”;
-For-profit (commercial) entities;
-Tax-Exempt organizations other than 501(c)(3) designated entities;
-Private foundations;
-Political organizations;
-Foreign governments;
-Colleges or universities;
-District of Columbia Government and Federal Government agencies, including DC Public Schools;
-DC Public Charter Schools;
-Parent Teacher Associations / Organizations; and,
-Organizations submitting an application whose content is combined with the application of another organization. Proposed projects must be “stand-alone” projects.

Organizations in receipt of an intent to fund letter for the FY 2019 General Operating Support (GOS) Program are eligible to apply, but only if they demonstrate their Field Trip Experiences project scope has not been funded in part or in full through the FY 2019 GOS Grant Program.

Related to the DAHI Grant:
-Re-granting (also known as “sub-granting”);
Examples of “Unallowable Costs”
-Overhead, maintenance and administration exceeding thirty-five percent (35%) of the grant;
-Food and beverages;
-Operational reserves;
-Tuition and scholarships;
-Debt reduction;
-Costs related to fundraisers and special events;
-Equipment expenses that exceed twenty-five percent (25%) of the grant award;
-Expenses unrelated to the execution of the project; and,
-Funding to universities, foreign governments or DC government agencies, including DCPS.

The DAHI grant program manager reviews and approves all expenses before the grant agreement is processed for payment. Grantees with questions regarding allowable costs may contact CAH’s grant program manager. The grantee will be responsible for demonstrating proof of organizational time and effort and all other project-associated expenses in the interim and final reports.

Pre-proposal Conference:

Attendance at one of three in-person workshops (see link for calendar workshop below) is a requirement for application to the DAHI grant program.

Technical Assistance and Workshops:

CAH staff members are available to assist grant applicants through group or individual technical assistance. CAH staff members will not write applications for applicants. However, CAH staff members are available by appointment (up to thirty (30) minutes) to review application drafts on government business days from application release date through one (1) week prior to the grant application deadline. CAH conducts free workshops for participants to learn useful information about the agency’s funding opportunities and how to submit a grant application. Workshop dates, times and locations listed below are subject to change. Attendance at one of three in-person workshops listed below is a requirement for application to the DAHI grant program. Participants are strongly encouraged to register in advance to attend a workshop. Valid photographic identification is required to enter DC government offices.

CAH utilizes an online grant portal to receive grant applications. All applications must be submitted online by 4:00 pm ET, Friday, June 22, 2019.

CAH will notify applicants of this grant program as to the results of their application by Monday, October 1, 2018.
